The Minister of Communications and Mass Communications of the Russian Federation, Nikolai Nikiforov, held a meeting on 17 April 2018 in Moscow at the time of the State Commission for Radio Frequencies (GKRC) when the possibility of deploying DAB+ was discussed, where appropriate and dependent on availability of spectrum. DAB+ has since been approved as a technical standard for digital radio in Russia.

Russia to allocate bandwidth for broadcast digital radio

DAB+ will receive band allocations for digital radio broadcasting in Russia, after the decision by the country’s State Commission for Radio Frequencies (SCRF) to allocate also frequencies to DRM. SCRF has confirmed that individual broadcasters will ultimately decide which digital radio standard to use based on the suitability for their regions.

Fraunhofer Institute introduced a solution to improve the reception quality of digital radio in the car

Developed by the Fraunhofer Institute of Integrated Circuits, the software solution for DAB + opens the possibility for the manufacturers of radio receivers and microcircuits to include the DAB + options in the radio system. "Using a method developed specifically for this purpose, an improved version of our DAB+ software library automatically suppresses any sporadic narrowband interference. Harmful signals of this kind can create electronic components of cars," explains the infotainment manager Martin Spitel.

The band planned for usage is 175.872 to 228.128 MHz and the possibility of using these frequencies was confirmed by the Research Institute of Radio, which conducted tests of compatibility of DAB + networks with networks already operating in Russia.
