In November 2017 the NEPLP evaluated the results of the year long DAB+ trial in Riga carried out by the State Radio and Television Center of Latvia and decided not to continue the trial nor to support the introduction of DAB+ in Latvia until December 31, 2022.

Electronic Communications Office - VAS Elektroniskie sakari

The Joint Stock Company “Electronic Communications Office” administers the radio frequency spectrum and numbering, plans the technical utilisation of the radio frequency spectrum, determines assignments, provides electromagnetic compatibility and allocates identification signals for the operation of the radio equipment. The company is responsible for the provision of numbering services. The responsibility of the “Electronic Communications Office” includes technical expertises of technical projects for the installation of electronic communications networks and the co-ordination of construction projects. In order to optimise the Company’s resources, the role of regional offices in supervision and control functions has been enforced.

The licensor of the radio licenses is The National Electronic Mass Media Council (NEPLP). The NEPLP is an independent, autonomous institution that represents the public interest in the field of electronic mass media. The Council supervises the compliance of the operations of electronic mass media with the Constitution of the Republic of Latvia, Electronic mass media law and other relevant legislation.

The Latvian State Television and Radio Broadcasting Centre has announced the expansion of the DAB+ reception areas. At the beginning of the DAB+ trial in 2016 the DAB+ coverage zone covered a radius of 40 km around Riga. Now it has increased to 60 kilometers.

Latvia extends reach of its digital radio tests

Digital radio is on the move in Latvia, as the Latvian State Radio and Television Centre has announced that it is increasing the reception zone for its DAB+ trials. The transmission supplier originally placed the zone at 40 kilometers around Riga when the tests began in late 2016, but it has now been bumped up to 60 kilometers.

DAB+ expansion continues across Europe

Updates from the Netherlands, Germany and Latvia on the expansion of DAB+. Reception of DAB+ for both commercial and public radio has recently seen a boost in the Utrecht, in the Netherlands. Media Broadcast has completed their plans to cover Germany as best they can, using 110 different mux transmitters. Whilst Latvia officially launched DAB+ testing in December 2016.
